The cheapest is a box, an ordinary box. We must therefore make a box, but it can’t be ordinary, said the architect. It must be a space where you enjoy spending time, where you feel inspired, where you can breathe and, above all, where you can paint and make art.
Boksen bør plasseres slik at den skyggelegger minst mulig og mest mulig sammenhengende hage beholdes. Det bør være lett for publikum å komme til atelieret hvis det skal holdes små utstillinger eller kurs. Samtidig bør atelieret ha fin utsikt og lysinnslipp som gjør det attraktivt å oppholde seg der.
En både vakker og praktisk plassering av den nye bygningen er inntil den bevokste fjellknausen mot nord. Knausen eies av kommunen og er et vernet naturområde som aldri vil bli bebygget. Dette åpner for muligheten til å få bygge helt inntil istedenfor å måtte forholde seg til en 4 meters avstand fra nabogrensen i nord.
The box should be placed where it affects the space and light in the garden as little as possible. It should be easy for the public to access the atelier if small exhibitions or courses are to be held there. At the same time the atelier should have good light and nice views that make it an attractive place to be.
A both beautiful and practical setting for the new building is adjoined to the overgrown rock towards the northwest. The rock is owned by the municipality and is a protected nature area that will never be developed. This opens up the possibility to get the permission to build right next to it, without considering the usual rule of building 4 meters from the neighbouring site.
Et høyt volum vil gi plass til større malerier og skape et flott innvendig rom. Det gir også anledning til å plassere et stort vindu mot nord, som gir godt lys for å male og en flott utsikt mot naturen på toppen av fjellknausen. Mot sør kan man lage en stor glassåpning med en terrasse utenfor, slik at atelieret strekker seg helt ut i hagen i sommerhalvåret. Gjennom denne glassåpningen har man også utsikt til nok en bevokst fjellknaus i hagens søndre hjørne.
En ny, høy konstruksjon risikerer å skyggelegge deler av hagen. For å unngå dette bør toppen av boksens sydøstre hjørne kuttes. Et slikt kutt senker også skalaen på bygningen og demper opplevelsen av høyden når man nærmer seg atelieret, og når man oppholder seg i hagen. I tillegg skaper kuttet i boksen et mer interessant innvendig rom.
Atelieret ble bygget innenfor budsjett, med noen ekstra kvaliteter som forvandlet boksen til et noe mer enn en boks: stor innvendig romhøyde, to store vindusflater og et skrått hjørne. Det handler ikke om hvor mye penger man har til rådighet, men hvor man velger å legge pengene.
A high volume will give room for large paintings and create a great space inside. It also presents the opportunity to place a big window towards the north that gives great light for painting and a nice view of the landscape on the top of the rock. Towards the south, a big opening with a terrace outside can be placed, thus stretching the atelier space out into the garden in the summer. Through the opening there is a view on yet another small, overgrown rock in the southern corner of the garden.
A new high construction risks shading parts of the garden. To avoid this, the top of the southeast corner of the box should be cut. This also reduces the scale of the building and subdues the perception of its height when approaching the atelier and when staying in the garden. In addition, the cut in the box creates a more interesting space inside.
The atelier was built, within budget, with a few extra qualities that transformed the box into something more than a box: great ceiling height, two large openings and an oblique top corner. It’s not about how much money you have, but where you choose to put that money.
