Hytte Hernæs

Ombygging & tilbygg av hytte.

Cabin remodelling & extension.

On Nesodden, south of Oslo, Norway, lies a beautiful, forested site with magnificent tall pine trees and terrain that slopes steeply down towards the fjord to the west.
The cabin sits on a small plateau mid-way down the slope, hidden from above and with a fantastic view of the water.

Opprinnelig hytte

Original cabin

Originally it was a Japanese inspired elongated one floor building in dark brown painted wood with exposed beams and columns, drawn by acclaimed Norwegian modernist architect Håkon Mjelva in 1959.

The building was designed as a summer cabin, lacking both insulation and indoor plumbing. The entrance was through a small kitchen and there was only an outdoor access to the bedrooms.

When plans for a new municipal water and sewage pipe nearby made future indoor plumbing possible, Mikado Arkitektur was commissioned to repurpose the cabin for year-round use. This meant modernising the kitchen, insulating the cabin and creating a new designated entrance, an indoor access to the bedrooms and an extension with a bathroom and wc.

One of the cabin’s main qualities was its secluded location, with its long side towards the west, facing the view of the fjord. Keeping, and even enhancing this quality while adding functionality, became an important goal when working with the plan.

The original plan was designed as a sequence of equal sections that followed the main load-bearing structure with its centre-to-centre distance of 2 metres. All the rooms were arranged side by side in a row, with a narrow veranda running the entire length of the façade facing the fjord.

Following the rhythm of Mjelva’s plan layout, the bathroom extension was added at the southern end of the row of rooms.

The roof of the extension was designed to mimic the one of the old cabin but was flipped in the opposite direction. This announced the arrival of a new addition, whilst creating a bond between the two parts of the building. A kinship between the extension and the old cabin was also established by using the same materials and colours.

By breaking the continuity of the old roof by lifting the new roof up towards the view, the extension became a kind of exclamation mark at the end of the long building.

Carrying on Mjelva’s idea of a blurred limit between inside and outside, the front façade of the extension is occupied by a huge, pivoted glass door. Behind it lays the bathroom with a sunken Onsen-like bathtub placed in front of the fantastic fjord view. The bathtub is also a small dedication to the Japanese in Mjelva’s architecture.

Originally the two bedrooms were set back from the rest of the façade, creating an alcove serving as an external access point.

To create indoor access to all parts of the cabin, the bedrooms were moved forward to align with the rest of the façade, leaving room for a corridor in the rear.

This move was of course quite a large intervention but none the less necessary to keep the main qualities of the cabin, such as a fjord view from the bedrooms.

To create a designated main access to the cabin, the bedroom directly neighbouring the living room was turned into a new entrance connecting the two sides of the cabin and creating a buffer between the more public and the more private parts of the cabin.

To compensate for the loss of one of the bedrooms in the old part of the cabin, it was decided the extension was also to house a new bedroom placed behind the bathroom. Following the shape of the site, the end wall of the extension was angled towards the fjord, securing a nice view from the bedroom behind as well.

The added bedroom in the rear turned the rectangular cabin into an L-shaped building thus creating an entrance atrium towards the east.

A staircase was designed to climb from the atrium up the sloping terrain to a roof terrace over the new bedroom.

Mikado arkitektur is always searching for a way to visually link an extension to the original building at the same time as being true to the time we live in both in terms of content and aesthetics.

The extension was shaped to follow Mjelva’s idiom and theory of ideas but with a recognisable foothold in the present.
